Cave diving around the World by Mathew Partridge

The thought of cave diving to many is that of crawling through small tunnels and shafts in pitch black darkness and this does not sound that appealing to many sport divers but submerging in crystal clear cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico to view the spectacular formations and underwater canary could entice even the faint hearted to try a spot of cave diving.

Cave diving is considered the most hazardous of all diving disciplines as there is generally no immediate access to the surface, calling for more advanced dive planning, equipment requirements and diver skills to execute these dives without ill event. Through training and experience, diving underground can be one of the most rewarding adventures available to a diver.

Many of the world pioneering wreck divers applied techniques and procedures from Cave diving. Progressive penetration, line techniques, gas management and the technical diving rig are some of the things that share similarity in both diving disciplines.

Some of the more popular Cave diving areas around the world including Florida, considered the birthplace of cave diving, Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Dordogne, New Zealand, Australia, Bahamas, and of course the British Isles. More recently exploration of caves not visited by the masses included systems in Thailand & Asia, Russia, Korea and Japan.

There are many different routes available for training; some of the major training agencies recognized for cave diving are linked here.
